Yvonne K Cross

Yvonne Cross, born on February 29, 1948, to the late Fannie A. Cross, peacefully passed away on March 23, 2024, at 12:14 pm. She was joined in marriage to the late James Allen Cross for 51 years, and from this union, five children were born. Yvonne was deeply devoted to providing for and supporting her family throughout her life.

She dedicated many years of service at Darden Cage Farm as a USDA Grader, Gates Poultry Farm, Down East Health and Rehab as a dietary aide, and Green’s Meat Market. Her commitment extended to her church family, where she served on the kitchen committee and in hospitality roles for numerous years. Even as her health declined, she continued to worship online and via phone with her church community, often sending dishes to share with fellow members. While worshipping during her online services, she would miss and ignore phone calls during that time.  Yvonne cherished participating in bible study with her extended church family at Healing Temple of Portsmouth, VA. Known for her kindness, she delighted in assisting young adults at church, occasionally sneaking them extra food when no one was watching.

Yvonne's exceptional skills as a homemaker were evident in her love for cooking and hosting gatherings for her family. She found joy in gardening, decorating for various holidays, and treasured moments spent with her grandchildren. She marveled over them fussing over who was the closest. Whether hosting sleepovers or offering sage advice, she imparted values of hard work, goal setting and ambition to her grandchildren. Yvonne also enjoyed word search puzzles and cherished conversations with her closest friends, affectionately referred to as "The Golden Girls."

She was preceded in death by her son James “Mike” Cross, Brothers – Delton Knight, Alton Knight, Thomas Knight and Lawrence Knight and Sister – Dorothy Knight

She leaves to cherish her memories daughters: Sharon Patrick (Berlin) of Roper, NC, Patricia Cross of Gates NC, and sons: Mark Cross of Suffolk, VA and Derrick Cross of Gates, NC, one daughter in law, Rachel Cross of Capital Heights Md., sister, Joyce Young of Memphis, TN, two brothers, William (Barbara) Knight and Ronald (Barbara) Knight, Sisters- in- law, Janice Boone, Bertha Boone, Margaret Cross (Mcell) of Gates, Angenita Boone of Greensboro, NC and Peggy Goulet (Robert) and Rita Gatling Brinkley (Benjamin) of Suffolk, VA., eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren (whom she loved more than anything), a special son, Terance Hall, along with a host of other relatives, loved ones and friends.

The viewing and visitation will be held on Friday, March 29th from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 30th at 12:00 Noon at New Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church, Gates, NC.
